Background Supervisor

Read scripts, study storyboards and design overall look and feel of the environments of certain scenes or entire episodes. Suggest revisions and add notes on background and prop designs, that will further the story and artistic vision of the show. Keep abreast of script, storyboard, and animatic changes to make sure design assignments reflect the most updated versions. Implement all executive notes.

Reference and discuss storyboard with directors and supervising director for final designs to make sure background designs and props are aligned with directors ideas and overall look and feel of the animated series. Be familiar with story and jokes and making sure all storyboard needs are met.

Cultivate an in-depth knowledge of the show style and rules. Improve and maintain quality and continuity of designs within the show. Assist departments to achieve these expectations in quality of designs. Catch technical and creative errors and instruct/guide team members to implement fixes.

Make assignments to designers for multiple projects. Daily check in with designers to update assignments as needed. Manage timescales in order to complete assignments on schedule and within budget. Work with production and design coordinators to curate assignments for background and prop artists based on workload and strengths. Assist in their breakdowns and review their lists/provide feedback for any organizational errors. Work with them to provide the correct references to artists, relevant to each assignment. Daily review and notes on all designs completed within the team assist in orientation, onboarding and training of new staff.

Generate 3D models for vehicle designs to aid the prop design team train background and prop designers in the use of photoshop to create background designs and prop designs.

Train designers and painters in the use of toon boom harmony to create background designs, background paint, prop design, color styling, and character design files that are clean, technically organized and set up correctly in order to move forward in the animation pipeline without resulting in problems in the background paint department or retakes in animation.

Train background and prop designers in traditional perspective drawing, as well as primetime perspective drawing.

Train designers in the visual language and design rules of the show, as well as the artistic vision of the show creators. Create PDF guides for artists, using premiere pro to create video tutorials for designers to help them get acclimated to the toon boom harmony software. Strong communication with the character and prop design departments and background paint department for inter-department collaboration. Troubleshoot and provide technical support to background design, prop design, character design and paint department when facing software bugs, lags and corrupted files.


Sketch and draw and make revisions, including character animation, color changes, and camera moves.

Revise background and prop designs to ensure that all images are set up properly, including image s that need to move (e.g. an opening door, ringing telephone).

Assist in new character animation, including scene set-up and character rigging. Refine images by manipulating light, color, texture, shadow, shading, and motion.

Must have 24 months of experience in Toon Boom Harmony software, 3D Modeling experience, and Cintiq plus must be IATSE Local 839 member or willing to join.
